What is the Role of AI in Future-Proofing Trades and Attracting Young Talent

550,000. That’s how many plumbers the US is expected to be short of in 2027, according to an analysis by John Dunham & Associates. This shortage is not confined to a single trade but spans across multiple critical trade jobs such as plumbers, electricians, and carpenters. Additionally, the field service industry – the workers responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing complex equipment and machinery – faces a critical labor shortage exacerbated by an aging workforce and a widening skills gap. In North America, 46% of field techs are over 50 years old, and looking to retire within the next decade.

But, there’s a promising shift. Recent reports highlight that many Gen Z workers are now opting for trade careers over traditional college pathways. The steep cost of college is not the sole motivator steering young people towards skilled trades. As AI becomes more prevalent, many Gen Zers perceive manual labor as less susceptible to full replacement by emerging technologies compared to many white-collar jobs.

While this demographic recognizes that AI won’t completely replace these roles, they see the value in utilizing AI to assist with their tasks. For field service specifically, AI can help by simplifying diagnostics and enhancing troubleshooting, making these roles more accessible and appealing to the next generation.

Additionally, AI’s ability to train new workers on technical skills contributes to the sustainability of the workforce and the overall success of the company. Recent data indicates that job mobility is common across various age groups, particularly among younger workers. Organizations need a method to preserve their workforce’s knowledge when workers inevitably leave, and AI provides a solution for this need.

It also helps mitigate the cost impact associated with underperforming talent; studies such as Aquant’s field service benchmark report indicate that the least effective field service employees can cost an organization 80% more than their most effective counterparts. In contrast, if every employee had the knowledge and skills to perform like the top 20% of the workforce, service costs would be reduced by as much as 22% – and this is achievable, with the help of AI.

How AI is training workers

AI assistance is training and upskilling less-experienced workers in real-time, bringing their efficiency up to par with their skilled counterparts. However, when it comes to sectors like field service, organizations will need a customized approach. Every service challenge is one of a kind and generic AI answers won’t cut it. Certain AI technologies out on the market – ones that take a personalized approach and are built for specific use cases – will collect and process data from multiple trusted sources, including expert insights, using advanced algorithms to deliver actionable information on devices like iPads and mobile phones.

Through advanced pattern recognition, the AI identifies key connections and behavioral patterns in the data, providing deep contextual awareness. Additionally, the AI integrates expert knowledge into reliable data to enhance decision accuracy, supported by an intuitive interface and a predictive algorithm. The system continuously adapts based on real-time feedback and business goals, evaluating solution effectiveness and making necessary adjustments to optimize and personalize service delivery.

By integrating these kinds of AI tools in the training and day-to-day operations of field service jobs, the industry can not only address the current labor shortage but also future-proof its workforce. This ensures that services remain responsive to the high and ever-increasing customer expectations.

Additionally, as AI handles more of the technical load, workers are able to shift their focus towards developing soft skills, such as customer service, communication, and teamwork. This shift makes the trades more appealing to a broader range of individuals, including those who may not have previously considered a career in this field due to its technical demands. Emphasizing soft skills enhances job satisfaction and adaptability, making trade careers more dynamic and fulfilling in an ever-evolving work environment.

BambooHR has published a new study on the state of Return To Office (RTO) sentiment, revealing that nearly one-third (32%) of managers acknowledge that the primary aim of RTO policies was to monitor employees. Additionally, one-quarter (25%) of VP and C-suite executives and 18% of HR professionals admit they anticipated some voluntary turnover with RTO implementation. Currently, a significant majority of both remote (88%) and in-office (79%) employees feel the pressure to demonstrate that they are online and working.

“The conversation around work modes is one of the most important things to address and get clear on as a business. It often gets reduced to just RTO, but it’s actually a much bigger conversation around how teams best work together and is a leader-led initiative,” said Anita Grantham, Head of HR at BambooHR. “RTO is one of many different work modes, and if a change in work modes is needed, it’s important to handle the transition thoughtfully. Any hasty change to an employee’s work mode can leave your company culture in a precarious situation where employees are not unified, management teams are seen as overlords, and employee satisfaction will continue to nose dive.”

Performative Cultures and The Green Status Effect
Hybrid work and RTO mandates have unexpected consequences that have office culture shifting to performative tactics where just under half (42%) of all employees feel they’re showing up solely for the purpose of being seen by their bosses and managers. Employees are adopting various strategies to put on a show, whether working remotely or on-site. Here’s how they ensure their efforts are visible:

  • In-office
    • 37% walk around the office so coworkers see them.
    • 35% plan meetings with other coworkers who are also in the office.
    • 33% show up earlier or leave later than their manager.
  • Remote
    • 39% participate in social conversations in work messaging apps.
    • 31% schedule-send emails.
    • 64% of remote workers admit to keeping work messaging apps perpetually open, displaying a green “active” status to imply they’re online and actively engaged in work, even when they may not be actively working.
      • While all workers are taking steps to demonstrate productivity, it’s among remote employees that the “Green Status Effect” has emerged.

Management’s Not-So-Noble Efforts
Many leaders are using RTO as a tactic to increase productivity in employees or even prod employees to quit, leaving HR teams (22%) without clear metrics to measure a successful RTO. It’s clear these efforts are not producing the desired results.

  • Efforts:
    • Nearly two in five (37%) managers, directors, and executives believe their organization enacted layoffs in the last year because fewer employees quit than they expected during their RTO.
    • Nearly a third (32%) of managers admit the desire to track employee work was a main goal for their company’s RTO.
    • Nearly half of managers say that the main goal of their company’s RTO was improving company culture (46%).
  • Results:
    • Workers (both in-office and remote) only work for around three-quarters (76%) of a 9-to-5 shift; the other quarter is spent socializing, procrastinating, or doing non-work-related tasks. Put simply, all workers typically spend 2 hours out of every 8-hour shift not working.
    • When it comes to who’s more productive overall, in-office workers spend around one hour more socializing than their remote counterparts, while remote workers spend that time on work-related tasks and responsibilities.
    • Since having an RTO mandate, more than a fourth (26%) say a greater divide has developed between remote and non-remote workers.

“The distrusting and performative cultures some companies are cultivating are harmful to bottom-line growth and it’s becoming more clear that leaders should take each employee’s experience into account,” Grantham said. “It’s okay to have broad RTO policies but when 61% of parents and caretakers who prefer remote work say it’s because it allows them to fulfill their family responsibilities (vs. 38% non-caretakers) and 63% of workers with disabilities prefer remote work (vs. 51% of non-disabled workers), individual exceptions make sense. We’re striving for a balance between the needs of the organization and the needs of the humans we work with.”

Lenovo™ has launched the latest version of its Work For Humankind project, called ‘Meet Your Digital Self’. This initiative emphasizes the potential of smarter technology and AI to drive change and support mental health professionals in tackling the global youth mental health crisis. It addresses the challenges young people face due to the disconnect between their real and online lives, with 67% of Gen Z feeling this disparity leads to loneliness and anxiety. Despite 49% of Gen Z finding it easier to express themselves online, 60% wish they could have difficult conversations with family and loved ones in person.

Sarah Kendrick, Clinical Director at Mental Health Innovations, the charity running the UK’s Shout 24/7 text support service said, “One in eight people globally grapple with a mental health condition, with Gen Z experiencing the greatest impact, where that figure rises to one in five. The type of AI innovation in Lenovo’s ‘Meet Your Digital Self’ social experiment shows promise as a way in which generations with different understandings of online personas can meet and understand each other.”

In this first-of-its-kind social experiment, Lenovo pioneered the use of AI made possible by its broad portfolio of technology, from mobile phones and PCs to infrastructure, software, services, solutions, and cloud. The combined technology brought to life the entire online personas of two Gen Z project participants as lifelike avatars capable of having unscripted, natural conversation.

The experiment facilitated impactful, heartfelt conversations between the participants, their family members, and the avatars – conversations that might not have happened otherwise, in real life. The family members either didn’t know about their Gen Z participant’s online world or didn’t understand and accept it: be it their career choices or gender identity. By asking the digital avatars questions and having real-time conversations, each family member gained invaluable insights into their Gen Z loved one’s true self as expressed in the online world and were able to better understand and reconnect in real life. The project is a pioneering proof of concept demonstrating the positive impact technology can have in advancing positive change in the youth mental health epidemic, which has been worsened by their struggle to balance two distinct online and offline identities.

The 3D avatars not only resembled each participant but were built to be able to respond to real-time conversation – adjusting their tones, movements, and facial expressions based on the discussion. To do that the avatars were trained on data that came directly from each participant’s online persona.

According to new research from Lenovo, almost half (48%) of Gen Zs say talking to a trained professional would give them the confidence to talk more openly with the people they love in the real world.

In an effort to expand mental health support and resources for people in need, Lenovo has partnered with several organizations, such as Shout, a free, confidential, 24/7 text messaging service based in the UK; Crisis Text Line, a non-profit organization that provides free, 24/7 confidential text-based mental health support in both English and Spanish for anyone in the US and Puerto Rico; and Anata no Ibasho in Japan. These organizations train real people who are then supervised by mental health professional staff, offering support to millions in need.

The digital versions of the two Gen Z participants were created by weaving together data from across their social media, blog, and forum handles securely with their consent. The data was trained and tested, and the project designed and brought to life with Lenovo devices, services, software, servers, and cloud solutions. This is the first time ever that Lenovo solutions have come together to develop an avatar of this kind. Devices and solutions include Lenovo ThinkStation™ workstations; ThinkCentre™ desktop computers; Lenovo Legion™, ThinkBook™ and Yoga™ laptops; Lenovo tablets; ThinkVision™ monitors and accessories; motorola razr smartphones; ThinkEdge™ SE450 Edge Server; AI Professional Services and Lenovo | Dropbox Cloud Storage.

“Technology can become the bridge that shortens distances, making powerful human-to-human connection faster and more accessible to people in moments of need,” said Dr. Shairi Turner, Chief Health Officer at Crisis Text Line. “Whether someone is in a classroom, at a family event, or lying awake at night, the power of a text conversation with another human offers solace in anonymity and compassion without judgement. It is truly brave to reach out for support.”

Crisis Text Line reports that more than 70% of its texters are under the age of 25. Its text-based service helps people of all ages but was specifically created for young people allowing for on-demand support through text message.

Anyone who sees themselves in these films, struggling to reconcile their online and offline identities and more deeply connect with their friends and family, or who simply needs advice on how to reach out to someone close to them, can reach out for support by messaging Shout (UK), Crisis Text Line (US), or Anata no Ibasho (Japan).

“We recognize the importance of achieving a healthy digital balance for our overall mental wellbeing,” commented Emily Ketchen, global vice president and CMO of Intelligent Devices Group and International Markets at Lenovo.“With huge advancements in AI and smarter technologies, now is the time to explore and pilot creative new ways to use technology like AI thoughtfully and responsibly, for the greater good. Lenovo is uniquely positioned to lead here thanks to having one of the industry’s broadest portfolios of smarter technology—from AI devices to IT solutions—that can work seamlessly together to benefit our society and the next generation. Ultimately, we hope that through our ‘Meet Your Digital Self’ social experiment we can spark meaningful conversations that contribute to the mental wellbeing of individuals and communities worldwide.”

Chinatsu Hoashi, Gen Z participant from Japan comments: “Taking part in the ‘Meet Your Digital Self’ social experiment has definitely helped strengthen relationships with my family. By using technology and AI, I was able to open up more and convey what I always wanted them know. This has had a positive impact on my mental health, as I can finally express feelings I have been avoiding telling people because I was too embarrassed.”

Oscar Jackson-Walsh, Gen Z participant from UK comments: “Taking part in this social experiment has helped me to become more confident and bridge the gap between myself and my online persona. It has also enabled me to have more open conversations with my family around my identity, which has not only made me feel more loved and accepted than ever before, but also less alone and anxious in a family space.”

Ivanti has published the findings of its 2024 State of Cybersecurity Report. As the threat landscape becomes more complex and threat-actor tactics continue to evolve, cybersecurity professionals are in a constant struggle to stay ahead of the increasingly sophisticated methods employed by malicious actors. This situation has amplified the demand for innovative and adaptive security solutions.

Although the goals and challenges of IT and security professionals intersect, 72% report security data and IT data are siloed in their organization, which contributes to corporate misalignment and elevated security risk. Due to insufficient data, IT and security professionals report the following:

  • 63% report that siloed data slows down security response times.
  • 54% report that siloed data weakens their organization’s security posture.
  • 41% struggle to collaboratively manage cybersecurity.
  • Struggle to make informed security decisions regarding software employees use (including shadow IT) (47%), devices accessing the network and/or corporate resources (42%) and determining what vulnerabilities are exposing their systems (41%).

“While data silos can be a technology issue, resolving them and gaining a comprehensive understanding of an organization’s risk landscape requires leadership. However, CIOs and CISOs are at odds. They face a tug-of-war challenge between enabling employee productivity while ensuring data security, which can lead to an increase in cyberattacks. To foster a more secure workplace, collaboration is essential,” said Jeff Abbott, CEO, Ivanti. “When there is CIO and CISO alignment, it helps both parties build consensus on organizational risk tolerance while promoting cross-functional security and IT data collaboration. This eliminates costly ripple effects and increases data accessibility for investments in AI.”

Data silos are a universal problem for CISOs and CIOs — and a particularly thorny one given the speed of investments in AI, which will require data integration and accessibility. To ultimately strengthen an organization’s security posture and drive transformation, there needs to be CIO and CISO alignment and executive buy-in on security. According to Ivanti’s research, cybersecurity is widely viewed as a top priority, even at the board level. Fully 80% of those surveyed say their boards include someone with security expertise, and 86% report it’s a topic of discussion at the board level. This is promising to hear in light of the various cybersecurity concerns raised by the study.

For instance, when it comes to a practice called BYOD (bring your own device), IT and security teams use tools that were designed for just in-office usage and have no effective way to track and manage employees’ personal devices at work.

  • Just 63% can track BYOD alongside corporate-owned IT assets, yet 78% say employees use their personal devices at work even when it’s forbidden.
  • 81% of office workers admit they are using some type of personal device for work.
  • Of the 81%, half are logging in to networks and work-affiliated software on their personal devices. And 40% say their employers don’t know about their activities.

Another cause for concern – 54% of office workers were not aware that advanced AI could impersonate anyone’s voice. Ivanti’s research finds that 95% of IT and security professionals believe that security threats will be more dangerous due to AI. However, despite the elevated risk posed by AI, nearly one in three security and IT professionals have no documented strategy in place to address generative AI risks.

Taking these various concerns into account, the report emphasizes the critical need for alignment between the CIO and CISO in their approach to security mandates. This alignment can help organizations identify areas of friction and make operational improvements, eliminate data silos that hinder response times and conceal crucial insights, and gain a thorough understanding of the software supply chain. Ultimately, this collaborative effort fosters mutual accountability and enhances overall security posture.

Ivanti surveyed over 7,300 executive leaders, IT and cybersecurity professionals‌ and office workers in October 2023 to understand today’s most pressing cybersecurity threats as well as emerging trends, opportunities and business strategies.

Cohesity has appointed Dr. Craig Martell as its Chief Technology Officer. In this position, Dr. Martell will leverage his extensive industry knowledge to steer the company’s technical direction. He will integrate prevailing and emerging industry and customer insights to define and implement a strategic and impactful roadmap that ensures Cohesity’s future success.

Dr. Martell brings extensive industry and public sector experience and unprecedented expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, leading AI programs for top tech companies since 2013. Dr. Martell most recently served as the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer (CDAO) for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). In this role, he served as the senior official responsible for accelerating the adoption of data, analytics, digital solutions, and AI functions to generate decision advantage across the department – expertly guiding the DoD through a quickly-changing AI industry. With Dr. Martell as its first leader, the CDAO office was created to elevate digital and AI strategy development and policy formulation while ensuring the unity of mission and tighter integration for the department’s enterprise-wide data, AI, and cyber organizations.

Prior to joining the DoD, Dr. Martell held several senior roles at some of the most recognizable technology companies. At Lyft, he served as Head of Machine Learning, where he designed and built a state-of-the-art Machine Learning (ML) Platform, allowing the Lyft engineering team to quickly create and ship ML models using large-scale, new, and ongoing statistical programs. From 2018 to 2020, Dr. Martell was Head of Machine Intelligence at Dropbox, responsible for all machine learning, including overall vision-setting, drawing from analytics as applied to ML, and clear, concise communication of ML strategy across the organization. Before then, he led a number of AI teams and market-moving initiatives at LinkedIn. Dr. Martell was also a tenured computer science professor at the Naval Postgraduate School specializing in natural language processing. Dr. Martell’s proficiency in statistical principles and methodologies has been demonstrated in his several patents, including a Hybrid Classification System in 2021 and System and Method for Encrypting Data in Pictorial Data in 2008.

“The speed and scale Cohesity has achieved over the last several years is a testament to the incredible technology platform the company has built at the junction of multi-cloud, security and AI for the future of data protection. My role will be to accelerate the innovation internally and the advocacy externally of Cohesity’s AI-powered innovations that are second to none,” said Dr. Martell. “I’m honored to join Sanjay and the talented team he has put together as we accelerate the company’s course to advance AI and machine learning capabilities critical to addressing key challenges to enterprise data.”

“AI represents a massive competitive opportunity and advantage for Cohesity. Our launch of Cohesity Gaia – with its first-to-market, patent-pending innovations – was the first step in our strategy,” said Sanjay Poonen, president and CEO, Cohesity. “Attracting and hiring an industry pioneer of Craig’s caliber – someone who has been driving an agenda of responsible AI at the highest levels of both public and private sector organizations – rounds out our strong executive leadership team with expertise across security, multicloud, and AI. I expect that Craig’s experience and vision for Cohesity’s AI roadmap will accelerate our lead in this critical area of our business.”

The secret to having a stellar workday has been revealed – and it involves a “neat” way to boost your mood. A new survey conducted by Mind Reader, a leading brand in home and office organization, has unveiled the key to a successful workday: maintaining an organized workspace. In anticipation of Get Organized Day on April 26, the survey highlights the significant impact of an organized workspace on employee satisfaction and productivity. Polling 2,000 U.S. office workers, the study reveals that 86 percent acknowledge the influence of their workspace on their happiness, whether at home or in the office. Additionally, nearly 80 percent take pride in their workspace set-up, often spending up to two years to achieve the ideal setup. Implementing a few simple and creative changes to the workspace can contribute to a better workday, as 84 percent report feeling more productive when their workspace is organized. Moreover, they believe that with enhanced organization, their productivity could increase by as much as 38 percent.

“Mind Reader is committed to crafting the ideal workspace for our consumers – a space that’s not only comfortable and organized but also enhances productivity and overall well-being,” said Glenn Goldberg, Head of Marketing at Mind Reader. “Our latest survey findings are exciting and insightful; they underscore the impact of simple, intuitive workspace solutions on our consumers’ ability to flourish and maintain wellness, even during their busiest days.”

From workday happiness to work-from-home vs in-office workspaces to dream celebrity co-workers – Mind Reader uncovered some of the most surprising details about how modern Americans are working today. Check out the full Mind Reader survey results below and what they reveal about workspace organization across the U.S.

Location, Location, Location

  • Nearly half of respondents said they work remotely in some capacity of their job.
  • If they’re working from home, 59 percent said they still prefer to work from a desk, while 18 percent change spots throughout the day, 17 percent work from their dining room and 16 percent typically work in bed.
  • For those who work in person or in an office setting, they believe the best parts include:
    • Engaging with coworkers (37 percent)
    • Feeling more productive (29 percent)
    • Feeling more organized (29 percent)

Hybrid Habits

  • More than a quarter said they work in a hybrid environment, splitting their time between their home and an office. Comparing the two locations, 40 percent said their in-office workspace is more organized, while 29 percent said their home workspace is more organized.
  • However, hybrid workers spend more time customizing their at-home workspace than their office workspace – 35 percent, compared to 27 percent.
  • As for remote workers, 50 percent said the best parts of working from home are not having to commute, 48 percent said dressing how they want and 36 percent said feeling more productive.

Workspace Struggles

  • While people strive for an organized work environment, the study found that only 40 percent are ‘very satisfied’ with their current workspace.
  • For those looking for a more organized space, the common issues for unsatisfied respondents, include 48 percent feeling like they have insufficient space, 34 percent feeling back pain due to inadequate chairs, and 32 percent unhappy with the messiness.

Personal Organization

  • Over half of respondents said they were “professionally organized” but admitted they were personally chaotic. In fact, 61 percent of people felt the most organized in their work and 27 percent felt least organized in their mental health.
  • Compared to other aspects of their life, 77 percent said their workspace is more organized than the rest. Enough so that 47 percent believe their loved ones would be surprised to see just how organized their workspace is.

What’s Trending?

  • 83 percent swear the trends they’ve tried have effectively improved their organizational skills.
  • The top five organization trends of the past five years include:
